I went to a lovely house warming party at a colleagues home. I met so many interesting people there. We sat out on the patio in the hot night among about twenty strategically placed candles which served to set the ambiance as well as to help discourage mosquitos. My colleague, who is from Wales originally, just moved into a new flat with her roomate who is from France. He works in fashion and was telling me how he helped make a deal to turn plastic garbage into raincoats, and is working on utilizing fabrics dyed in medicinal herbs to make clothing that is aethetically appealing but also physically good for you to wear! I met a man who is one of four employees of the newly established embassy of the Dominican Republic. He told me he made friends with a street painter who he commissioned to make several pieces for him. I met an indian photographer who does social documentary photography (exactly what i'd love to do). We talked for awhile about how she got to where she was now, working for 12 years. I met a funny guy from England who works for a travel company. He told me about his company's camp in the mountain which is haunted. Ghosts seem to be a regular occurence here. There was a French woman who works in the food industry dealing primarily with developing Indias cheese industry. It was a great introduction to the type of foriegners that are attracted to Delhi.
Sunday the rain was coming down in torrents. There were huge lakes in the middle of the road. Rickshaws and cars were practically swimming along. People were continually stopping to fix their engines. Motorbikes tried to navigate around the puddles as best as possible. Here are some photos to see:
Meanwhile my roomate had gone back to have her knee redressed. The hospital took X-rays and explained that her kneecap had moved up from the fall. They told her that her legs were oddly formed and that they wondered if she had had polio as a child. They recommended surgery and sent her home from the hospital pretty shaken up. She made plans to go home to Scotland for the surgery and then to rejoin Ross in China. Meanwhile we discussed how this serious an injury could have happened and wondered who we could ask for advice. We called the Martins, the power couple leaders of Asha and they made an appointment immediately (on a saturday afternoon) to meet with a friend of hers who is an orthopedic surgeon. I meanwhile had made plans to meet up with a friend at Connaught Place, a large shopping and entertainment area But he couldn't get a rickshaw to drive him the 40 minutes and was told he'd have to call a cab and reserve it for the whole time we were out. So he didn't end up coming and I was getting increasingly antsy. Finally Ross and Kerry returned from the doctor with surprising news. This doctor had said that there was Nothing wrong with her bones at all and it appeared so only because the X-rays were taken at an odd angle. We were then thouroughly confused because it was a senior consultant at one of the best hospitals who had given her the first diagnosis. So, with these two contrasting verdicts she decided to hold off on flying home and wait until the stitches were removed to see how her knee was heeling.
This wknd was a good start to life in Delhi but hopefully Ill be able to explore more of the city next wknd.
